A recent survey in USA Today (USA Today 03/13/2006) showed that 40 million people in the United States have been diagnosed with arthritis. The incidence, by an almost 2 to 1 margin, is higher in woman then men. When we look at statistics for the last few years, there are a higher percentage of woman undergoing knee replacement surgery then men. The explanation for the higher incidence of arthritis in female versus males is not entirely clear but for many years, woman seem to put up with the pain and suffering of arthritis while less frequently seeking medical attention for this. This trend is slowly reversing.
