Peak Performance: PRP Treatment Helps Get You Back in Action

If you have ever had a stubborn twisted ankle, or a history with chronic issues like arthritis or tendonitis, platelet-rich plasma injections could benefit you!

What are PRP Injections?
Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injections are an innovative therapy treatment that uses your own blood to promote healing for things like sports injuries and other musculoskeletal issues.

What happens during a PRP injection?
A PRP injection treatment involves drawing a small amount of your blood and processing it in a centrifuge to concentrate the platelets your body naturally produces. Platelets have healing properties. This concentrated amount of platelet-rich plasma is then injected into a targeted area of your body, like an injured tendon or knee. The new concentration of platelets in the target area encourages your body’s ability to heal itself. This can help relieve pain, boost mobility, and other symptoms.

What kinds of conditions can PRP injections treat?
PRP injections can help many chronic injuries including:

Are there any side effects or risks with PRP injections?
You may notice some swelling and pain immediately after your treatment due to the injection and your body’s reaction to the new healing. The risks associated with PRP injections are very low because the treatment only uses your own blood.

What kind of results can I expect from a PRP injection?
Some people see immediate results, but everyone’s body is different and it may take a few weeks before you notice a significant change in your symptoms. The effects of a PRP injection may last for six months or longer but PRP injections are not permanent. Some conditions may need additional injections over time.

I was struggling with painful plantar fasciitis that was not improving despite rest, medication and physical therapy. It got to the point where I was unable to walk or run, when I had previously been doing both daily. I chose to get PRP because I wanted a treatment that tapped into my body’s ability to heal the injury as opposed to a temporary fix like a steroid injection that reduces the pain but doesn’t necessarily make it go away. I liked that the process was really quick, just one visit, and the downtime was minimal. There was no pain post-procedure, so I was able to resume my activities within about two days. While it took about 2-3 months for the full benefit to kick in, I am now back to running 6-7 miles with no pain and planning to run a half marathon in July!
