“I love the fact I get to participate in such an intimate way with such a universal human experience,” says Laura Denman, Medical Director of the Midwives Clinic. “After guiding over 2,000 babies into this world, it’s still a wonderful mystery to me—it’s as perfect as life gets. One of my sons recently asked me what I love about my job, and the truth is, it’s how it makes me feel. I learn so much from my patients, and I hope they learn a little from me.
“I’m very lucky to work with such amazing professionals,” says Denman, “and Valley has been incredibly supportive, welcoming us with open arms when we began our practice here ten years ago.”
Laura, who is an Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner, received her BS in Nursing in 1981 and her MS in Nurse-Midwifery in 1986. She has been practicing midwifery for 30 years, ten of those years here at Valley.
According to Laura, she made nurse-midwifery her career goal very early in life and, after 30 years of attending women in labor and caring for them before, during and after their pregnancies, she remains very happy with her career decision. She continues to be awed by the power of birth and motherhood, and feels privileged to provide healthcare and education to women throughout their childbearing years.
Laura lives in Burien with her husband and one cat. With her two sons grown and launched from the nest, she has a little more time for favorite diversions like reading, gardening, walking early in the morning with her friends, and exploring the beach at low tide.
* The 2016 Seattle Met Top Doctors survey polled doctors, nurses and physician assistants across King, Snohomish, Kitsap and Pierce counties, asking “If you or a loved one needed medical care, whom would you choose?” Voters nominated their peers based on the provider’s level of experience and competency within their specialty, rapport with patients – including patient satisfaction and compliance with care recommendations – and ability to work effectively with colleagues across specialties to deliver the best care for patients.
