Staff and visitors to Valley got an immersive lesson on colorectal health in December, thanks to a stroll through a 20-foot inflatable colon.
In partnership with Colon Cancer Stars, a unique, fun and informational inflatable walk-thru colon provided valuable information about colon health. Valley’s Gastroenterology, Colorectal Surgery, and Medical Oncology teams were available to discuss screening options.
“Our hope is that this event (helped) to lessen the fear of colonoscopy by showing the benefits of early detection and polyp removal,” said Joseph Roberts, MD, a gastroenterologist at Valley.
Exercise and healthy habits, such as diets high in vegetables, fruits, and whole grains support a healthy colon. Lifestyle Medicine team members presented our LAUNCH program, designed to help you get started with exercise in a safe and practical way, and dietician Natalia Zakharova offered recipes high in vegetables and whole grains.
Colorectal cancer is the second-leading cause of cancer mortality in the U.S. The good news is that unlike many cancers, it is often preventable and treatable when caught early through screening. People at average risk are now advised to begin getting screened at age 45. Learn more about screening colonoscopies at valleymed.org/colonoscopy.
