THE MOST COMMON REASONS FOR REVISION OF TOTAL HIP REPLACEMENTS

The award winning paper at the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons in Dallas, used a national inpatient sample database, to look at data from 51,345 revision total hip replacements performed in the United States between October 2005 and December 2006. The leading reason for revision surgery was recurrent dislocation of the hip in 22.5%, loosening of one or both implants in 20%, and infection in 15%. The average length of stay for revision total hip procedures was 6.2 days. Forty-one percent of cases involved revision of all components of the hip replacement, whereas, in 59% a partial revision of the components was performed.
